First edition of Gardena Star Bike kicks off

On 19/07/1998 the first edition of the Gardena Star Bike takes place, a 52 km long mountain bike marathon with 1800 m altitude difference, organised by the Club Rodes.
The route leads through the three villages of Val Gardena and then through the Sciliar Nature Park on the Alpe di Siusi, the largest plateau in Europe. The race touches the famous and picturesque skiing and hiking areas, which are ideal for mountain bike tours for both professionals and Sunday riders.

The track:
It starts at 1,400 m a.s.l. in S. Cristina and reaches Monte Pana (1,636 rn) after 3 km of ascent. Continue towards Plan de Cunfin, at the foot of the majestic Sassolungo, and then through the "Jënder" valley to Ortisei (1,236 m), the main town of Val Gardena. After a ride through the centre of Ortisei, you cycle through Bulla to the Alpe di Siusi, a very demanding climb of about 3 km with an altitude difference of more than 500 m, leading to the First Grand Mountain Prize on the Ritschalm (1,875 m).
Passing green meadows in full bloom, we reach Malga Molignon (2,054 m). Descend to the Tirler Hut and then climb up to the Zallinger Alm (2,037 m), where the second Grand Mountain Prize is awarded. You return towards Monte Pana and then, once again below the majestic Sassolungo and over the famous Saslonch (downhill course where a Ski World Cup race is held every December), you reach the village of Selva. Along the river, past Castel Gardena, the finish is reached at the Sportcenter lman in S. Cristina.
There are four refreshment points and two checkpoints along the route.

Among the more than 360 starters we find famous names like home athlete Karin Moroder, bronze medallist in women's cross-country skiing at the last Olympic Games in Japan, the well-known and always young Maria Canins as well as Annarita Goldin. Among the men we find prominent names like Claudio Vandelli, Dario Cioni and Hansjörg Lunger.
