A breath of the Olympics in Montiggl/Eppan

Raiffeisen Südtirol Cup: Hubert Pallhuber wins ahead of Marco Bui and Manfred Steiner from Eppan

Eppan-Appiano (p) - No April Fool's joke was the announcement of the Olympic participants of Sydney 2000 Hubert Pallhuber (Antholz) and Marco Bui (Mestre) at the South Tyrol Cup race in Montiggl on Sunday 1 April. They were joined by last year's World Cup winner from Mazatlan, Martino Fruet (TN).

There has never been such a great line-up in the 8-year history of the Raiffeisen Südtirol Cup. In general, the race organised by the Dynamic Bike Team from Eppan was a very successful event.  The marvellous spring weather, the many spectators and last but not least the record-breaking 200 participants from Italy, Austria and Germany all contributed to this.

There was one serious crash in the main race (Elite, U23, Sportsmen and Masters classes). After just 1 kilometre, around eight riders went down due to a protruding stone in the middle of the lane. Team Carraro's top riders Silvano Janes and Alessandro Forni were the worst hit and had to abandon the race. Hannes Pallhuber from Antholz (breathing problems) and master rider Paul Mair from Olang (broken chain) also had to retire on Sunday. Hubert Pallhuber set a fast pace at the front, taking the lead in the third of a total of 6 laps of 6 kilometres each and never relinquishing it until the finish.
"This was just a small test in view of the World Cup race on Sunday in Napa Valley in California. A place in the top 10 there would be a great result for me." (Hubert Pallhuber finished 43rd there; editor's note).
Marco Bui, who later came second, had made up a lot of ground in the final, at times trailing Manfred Steiner (Eppan) and Martino Fruet (Civezzano) by 1.30 minutes. "I've been in good shape for three weeks," said Bui. The 1999 Under 23 World Champion now lives mostly in Pergine (TN) where his girlfriend lives.
Manfred Steiner delivered a great race in front of his home crowd, coming third and also winning the Under 23 class: "Pallhuber and Bui are simply a size too big for me," said the man from Eppan. Steiner will also take part in the World Cup race in the USA (Manfred Steiner finished 85th there; editor's note). Franz Hofer from Sarntal was surprisingly strong in sixth place in the daily classification and 2nd of the Under 23 riders behind Steiner.
Elena Giacomuzzi from Val di Fiemme won the women's race ahead of Sandra Klose from Rosenheim, Germany. Alexandra Hober from Merano is still a little behind in her training and finished third.
