6th International Top Class Mountain Bike Race for the SANVIT Trophy in Eppan-Rungg

16/3/2003

On Sunday 16th March, the Mountain Bike Opening 2003 took place in Montiggl with the first race of this year's ‘Raiffeisen Südtirol Cup’.
There were numerous difficulties to master on the already established circuit: right after the start, the riders passed ‘Urban's Wurzeltrail’, where the good technicians were able to gain a head start. The ‘Raiffeisen Centre of the World’ intersection was interesting for spectators, where the bikers passed twice per lap; then it was on to the ‘Col d'Expan’ and on to the rapid descent ‘Kanal Planer’. The second ascent led to ‘Mont Sanvit’ which was a little difficult as the ground was still soft and muddy.

The almost 200 participants included the entire Trentino-South Tyrol elite, including local hero Werner Weiss, who missed out on the day's victory last year due to a major crash, and Eva Lechner, two-time Italian champion and European runner-up.

The sensational performances of the athletes from Eppan should be emphasised:
Thomas Riegler from Girlan won ahead of Werner Weiss in the ‘Elite’ category; Eva Lechner in the women's/junior women's category and her little sister Tabea in the schoolgirls' category. The day's victory went to Marzio Dehò (Master category) from Bergamo.

The Dynamic Bike Team would like to thank the sponsors, marshals, helpers and everyone who contributed to the success and smooth running of the event.
