MTB World Championships in Lugano (SUI) 2003

The 2003 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships were held in Lugano, Switzerland from 31 August to 7 September 2003. The disciplines included were cross-country, cross-country marathon, downhill, four-cross, and trials. The event was the 14th edition of the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships and the 18th edition of the UCI Trials World Championships.

This was the first year that the cross-country marathon was included in the UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships. From 2004 onwards, the cross-country marathon was run as a separate world championship.

Eva Lechner made it really exciting on her way to 2nd place on the junior podium at the MTB World Championships in Lugano (SUI).
There were 29 girls from 17 different national teams at the start at 10.30 am in Rivera. The favourites were the reigning world champion Lisa Mathison from Australia and the European champion Bettina Schmid from Switzerland. There was a lot at stake for the dynamic biker, as she was eliminated in the lead last year and was expected to achieve more than 4th place at the European Championships in Graz.
After a fast lap in the leading group, Eva lost a good 10 positions after a crash and had to start the second lap from 11th place. But luckily (mountain bike) races are only decided at the finish line, and so the Eppan woman took her fighting heart into her hands and was able to make up place after place.
Things got dicey again shortly before the end when the German Almut Grieb was able to close the gap to 50 metres. Eva had problems with her chain in a technical steep section and had to get off her bike briefly to repair the defect. However, the 18-year-old from Eppan was still able to pull out a lead of almost 30 seconds by the finish.
