4th Wilder Kaiser MTB Race - UCI C2

 

On Sunday, the 4th Wilder Kaiser MTB Race took place in Scheffau in North Tyrol, an international UCI race in the C2 category.
Our U23 athlete Gregor Pinggera took part in the race and chose it for another hard training session, and also had a small chance of scoring his first UCI points.

We arrived the day before: an extensive inspection of the course was planned for the afternoon. The weather conditions were the same as at home in South Tyrol: the temperatures were OK, but the ground was already soaked from the rain of the previous days... and it was raining. The course - about 3.5 kilometres long with almost 130 metres of altitude - was mostly on forest floor and meadow, and only a narrow strip on asphalt and gravel. Especially the stretches in the forest were not only very steep and extremely slippery, you were sometimes ankle-deep in mud. So Gregor already had to be careful when walking the course so as not to jeopardise the race the following day.

The rain subsided towards evening and the night remained dry. The race start on Sunday was scheduled for 3 pm. And while the youth categories all stayed dry in the morning, it started raining again in the afternoon shortly before the start of the last category, that of the elite and U23. Gregor also had a very bad day: he lacked spryness, found it hard to get going, and had to push the bike several times due to the wrong choice of tyres and set-up, losing a lot of time. In short: it was like a jinx. The persistent rain also made for very difficult conditions; at the end of the race, Gregor still placed 17th in the elite category.
