Race start also for our younger cross country racers

The day after the JUNIOR and OPEN categories at the first of the 5-stage Internazionali d'Italia Series 2023, the start of the youth categories (13 to 16 years) took place on Sunday 19 March in San Zeno di Montagna.
This was also the first international Cross Country appearance for some of our 13-year-olds, i.e. Niko Bernard, Samuel Kofler and Jakob Weger. Together with the already somewhat experienced racers Julia Kostner, Paul Marschall, Johannes Bendetta and Hannes Volgger they form the youth team of the Dynamic Bike Team.

The start was made by the 3 newcomers, who found themselves in their first race with a total of 113 participants in the starting field. And while Jakob and Nico were drawn for a starting number in the front midfield, Samuel got the proverbial very last number. After a good start, Jakob was able to work his way to the front very quickly. Niko was stuck in the thick of the field, as was Samuel, who did not manage to move up any further. And while Jakob was able to make up position after position, Samuel was strongly slowed down by the slower riders in front of him, until he fell victim to the 80% gap rule after the end of the 2nd lap and was taken out of the race. Jakob scored his first national top class points (22nd place) and Niko finished the race in 76th place.

After the 13-year-old boys, it was now the girls' turn: it was also the first MTB race for Julia, and she too had to start from far back due to a lack of points - like everyone in the Eppan youth team, by the way. On top of that, she had a botched start, so she was forced to roll up the field from the back right from the start. This takes a lot of energy, and although Julia has only been training on the bike again for a short time, she managed to work her way up a few places. After 2 laps she finally ended up in 7th place, which also earned her her first national top class points.

Now came Paul's first appearance: as the only 14-year-old in the Eppan team (after the departure of Leon Ambach), he also had to start from the back rows with bib number 100. He was able to manage the race quite well, but still noticed the lack of training, and so he finished in 94th place.

The last of the youth categories was that of the 15-year-old boys, which matched the other categories in terms of numbers with 109 starters. And here, too, Johannes and especially Hannes had their opponents almost all in front of them; so it was a case of running away to the front. Unfortunately, Johannes had a fall already in the first lap and had to recover from it briefly at the side of the track. He managed to regain some positions afterwards, but in the 3rd of the four laps he was already too far behind and - just like Samuel before - was taken out of the race. Hannes tried as best as he could to keep his pace in the meantime and finished his race in 76th place after 4 laps.
