Good performance at the Short Track Italian Championship 2023 in Chies d'Alpago (BL)

After last year's premiere in Courmayeur/Aosta Valley at the "Courmayeur MTB Event 2022" (Bericht siehe hier ->) , the national title bouts in Mountain Bike Short Track (MTB-XCC) took place for the second time this year.

The venue this time was the small community of Chies d'Alpago in the province of Belluno in Veneto with just under 1,300 inhabitants. Jakob Weger and Julia Kostner, the two most successful young riders at the moment, came from the Dynamic Bike Team in Eppan. The weather was already very warm during the whole week; the track was accordingly dry and fast, with some short but very steep ramps... and as usual for the Short Track without artificial obstacles.

For both of them, 2 very fast rounds were on the programme. The start was made by Julia, who started at 12 noon. And unfortunately she missed the immediate leap forward from the 2nd starting row, and was only in 9th place after the first lap. This meant an enormous effort in lap 2 to work her way forward - and it became an overtaking spectacle: already on the first long steep meadow climb she managed to pass the 4 riders in front of her, and was able to overtake two more by the time she reached the finish ... Third place and the bronze medal for the 14-year-old from Unterrain.

Jakob's race followed at 1 pm: the temperature had risen to over 30 degrees and the sun was beating down mercilessly from above. Jakob started the race from the 4th row of the grid, and tried to make speed from the start, but on this day nothing worked: he lacked the strength, the heat made it very difficult for him. He lost more and more ground; in lap 2 his front wheel slipped and he crashed. With his strength at an end, Jakob reached the finish line, disappointed about his first appearance in a short track race.

But now the first highlight of the season is coming up for the two: the 2023 Italian Cross Country Championship, which will take place on Sunday 16 July in Nave (BS).
