Mixed results at the Youth Italy Championship

The competitions of this year's MTB Youth Italy Cross Country Championships have just come to an end, and it has to be admitted that the results fell short of expectations.
This does not only apply to the Eppan team, which had hoped for a podium finish (albeit an extended one) beforehand - at least in the U15 women's category.

The title matches took place on Sunday 16 July 2023; a total of 600 youngsters aged between 13 and 16 competed for the 8 coveted jerseys.
The first start of the day was at 9 am: it was Jakob Weger who was the first of the dynamic bikers to start. There were 1 short and 2 long laps to ride, the course was technical with obstacles such as tree trunks, an approx. 10m long "rocks garden" with a subsequent jump, a steep curve and artificially pushed hills. Some of the climbs were very steep, the descents were forest trails. In short, worthy of an Italian championship. Jakob was able to keep up a high pace in the first of the 3 laps and had worked his way up to 11th place by the descent in lap 2. But a short carelessness in the fast flat section threw him off track and to the ground, and from that moment on nothing worked. The brake lever was misaligned and he started to feel pain in his abdomen. He finished the race, but was not able to finish higher than 26th... Still, a great performance in his first title fight!

The next start was at 10.10 am, this time it was Paul Marschall's turn. He had the same number of laps on the programme as Jakob. But Paul did not have a good day: he ran out of steam in lap 1 and struggled to the finish line, which he reached in a distant 95th place.

The third start of the day took place at quarter past eleven, namely that of the 14-year-old girls who had to complete 2 short laps. The temperatures continued to rise, it was already hot. Julia sought salvation in the run and this time made a real lightning start! She led the field in the first climb and tried to stay in front as long as possible. However, her strength slowly faded at the beginning of the second lap: she had to pay tribute to the high pace and the temperatures - by now well over 30 degrees - and finished the race in 8th place.
